New York City flooding: Mayor urges ‘extreme caution’ with all five boroughs under state of emergency

As flash flooding wreaks havoc across New York City as a result of torrential rain lashing the northeastern US, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a State of Emergency. Likewise, Mayor Eric Adams urged New Yorkers to shelter in place or remain at home.

There are alarming videos showing streets and subways underwater in Brooklyn, which has been particularly heavily struck by rising water. On the MTA, the organisation in charge of operating the city's transit system, numerous disruptions and delays were recorded.

A severe storm lodged over the city, and parts of upstate New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, leading to widespread flood watches and warnings.

The New York area could see an unprecedented amount of rain with between two and five inches having already fallen in some areas since midnight.
